Using Variable Fonts on the Web

Duration: 180 mins

This workshop will introduce you to variable fonts, what they’re good for, where to get them, how to use them, and why you should care. We will introduce the variable font format through a number of live projects and examples. We’ll explore the different kinds of variations, see how they integrate with existing CSS and a couple of new attributes, and discover what they offer for design, accessibility, and performance. The first part of the workshop will focus on what variable fonts are, and how they impact design, accessibility, and user experience (including examples in real projects and example code). The second part will focus on how to implement them well, tips for improving loading performance and page render times, how to set up self-hosting of the fonts, and how to work with the Google Fonts API to use their catalog of available variable fonts. It will be as hands-on as you want it to be: slides and sample code will be available to code along if you like, but it is not required.
